When a child falls behind in their reading skills, they fall behind in many other subjects as well. With the public school system already stretched thin for resources, it’s hard to be able to give those kids the one on one attention they need. Luckily, Center for Success, a nonprofit after-school program, is helping to make sure kids stay on track.
With reading as it’s main focus, the Center for Success’ goal is to give each child their own personal mentor. These volunteers will then stay with their student throughout the entire program, giving the child the comfort off a familiar face that understands exactly where they are in their studies. After participating in the program for only a year, a students reading level can jump up by an average of over 2 years.
However, the program doesn’t just focus on studies. In addition to daily interactions, the Center for Success hosts special speakers that often bring with them interactive workshops that focus on subjects ranging from art to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). They also partner with outside organizations to offer activities like swimming and field trips to museums or exhibits.

With locations in Detroit and Pontiac, the Center for Success is still looking at expanding in the near future to allow for more students to get the help that they need.
