If you are unfamiliar with Etsy, it is essentially an online marketplace and a medium for artists, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, shoppers and more. Etsy, founded in 2005, has more than 36 million items for sale and more than a million sellers. Local talent and shops from the area are abundant on the site. Here are a few to check out for the holiday season.
Pipperillo Studios is owned by Detroit-based artist Jessica Rowland. Some of her specialties include wooden journals, laser-etched items and key chains. According to the studio’s Etsy page, Rowland generates her products from the beginning stages and ideas all the way through manufacturing and finishing. Custom orders are welcome!
Jess Sheeran of Ypsilanti produces and sells hand-made stuffed animals, plush pillows and other items. These “critters” are often seen at local events and markets. Sheeran has been designing and making these stuffed critters for about eight years. Additionally, CoolCritters has a five-star review on Etsy!
Detroit-based illustrator Jodi Lynn Burton is a doodler and artist. Her creations are often of science figures, scholars and others, which she turns into “shrinky-dink” art, which essentially means she draws, then bakes the art piece to shrink it. Burton sells prints, magnets, cards and more.
Iconic Detroit does a great job capturing the city of Detroit, the Great Lakes and the state of Michigan. The coasters feature cities, ball parks, landmarks, companies and more. Iconic Detroit also sells photographs, wall art, wood art and more. Here, you can also check out the shop’s website.
There are hundreds of local artists and shops who choose to share their work on Etsy, and these are just a few. If you are interested in finding other makers, check out the Metro Detroit Etsy team page. Seeing as how Etsy is a platform for products to be shared, it is a great place to look for holiday gifts!
