Art helps build and define a society, and this idea couldn’t be more true when artistic individuals band together to create a positive change in their community. The Michigan Glass Project was founded in 2012 by a group of glass artists that wanted to create art for the good of the Metro Detroit community. Co-founders Allison Key and Drew Kups joined together with other Michigan glass artists to put on a fundraising event to help the historic Belle Isle Aquarium open its doors again for the first time since 2005.
The group continued their charity efforts, and in 2015 turned their attention towards Art Road. The mission of Art Road is to bring art classes back to Detroit schools that had to cut them due to funding. That year, the Michigan Glass Project was able to raise $40,000 dollars for Art Road’s mission.
In 2016, the Michigan Glass Project continued their work with Art Road and held several very successful events, this time collecting double the amount; a whopping $80,000! As a result, schools like Spain Elementary were able to bring back their entire K-8th Grade art classes.
Thankfully, the Michigan Glass Project will continue with their charitable efforts while they continue to make beautiful glass art. Their mission of helping to fund charities, as well as keep the world of art alive and thriving, makes them an easy selection for joining the ranks of the Chevy Detroit Champions.
