One-third of Michigan breast cancer patients can’t afford treatment. Here’s how to help.

Fact: every year more than 9,000 Michigan residents are diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, over a third will struggle to pay for treatment. Over a quarter will use up their entire personal savings for medical bills. Many will halve or skip doses of life-saving medication as a result. Nearly 10% will be forced to file for bankruptcy.

Breast cancer is an epidemic worldwide. Almost everyone has been affected or knows someone who has been affected by the disease. But beyond the physical trials and tribulations associated with the illness itself, few recognize the lasting, oftentimes overbearing financial burden that comes with it.

Since 2005, the Shades of Pink Foundation has worked tirelessly to alleviate the economic hardship breast cancer inflicts on the women of southeast Michigan. By supporting the costs of utility bills, rent and mortgage payments, daycare fees, transportation, and other necessities, Shades of Pink directly and powerfully impacts the lives of those facing their greatest battle.

On May 21, in partnership with Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers, they will host their 17th Annual “A Wild Time at the Detroit Zoo.”

The event will take place from 7 a.m. to noon, providing the opportunity to explore the exciting zoo exhibits, visit the Big Top, and partake in family-friendly activities like a zoo scavenger hunt. Funds raised will contribute directly to our neighbors in need of assistance.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $25 for children. “Sleepwalker” tickets (supporters who cannot attend in person but wish to donate) are available for $25. Prices will increase after 5 p.m. on May 15.

Since its inception in 2005, Shades of Pink has successfully raised over $2 million dollars to support Metro Detroit’s bravest women. Now is your chance to take part in the effort. To learn more, visit shadesofpinkfoundation.com.
