August is National Family Fun Month, and what better way to spend some time with your loved ones than outdoors in the sunshine? Parents, gather your kids and let the following spark inspiration for outdoor family fun in the D:

Head to the ballpark! There’s no better bonding than cheering on everyone’s beloved hometown baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. On Sunday home games, kids ages 14 and under can enjoy the carousel and ferris wheel for free, and weather permitting, run the bases. Most importantly, you’ll witness the Motor City Wheels race and see who takes home the coveted trophy, The Big Wheeler!

If you’re an animal-loving brood, head to the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak for the Wild Summer Nights Concert Series! Concerts are held Wednesdays this month at 6:30 p.m., and families are invited to bring blankets and a cooler. Zoo concessions will be open during the concert, where you can purchase snacks, drinks, beer and wine. This Wednesday, Aug. 5, enjoy pop music by Taylor Taylor. Concerts are free with zoo admission, and parking costs $6 for non-members.

On a hot day, cool off at one of Metro Detroit’s 13 metroparks! Kensington Metropark, located in Milford, offers swimming at Martindale and Maple beaches, as well as waterslides and a spray area at the Splash n’ Blast. You’ll also find boat rentals, biking trails, disc golf, play areas, and fishing at Kent Lake. Kayak, canoe and paddleboat rental fees can be found here. A daily parking pass at Kensington costs $7. Don’t forget to pack a picnic!

Adventure starts with a vehicle that’s up for anything. Trailblazer combines comfort you want, the versatility you need, and the technology to make every moment count.

No matter how you spend your day, cap off your family fun with ice cream! Steer clear of chain joints, and instead opt for a Michigan-made one specific to Metro Detroit. Try Treat Dreams of Ferndale, where with flavors like Tiramisu, Maple Peanut Toffee, Zucchini Bread and Blueberry Basil Bourbon. Blank Slate Creamery in Ann Arbor is another great choice, with options including Salty Caramel Coffee, Bananas Foster, Malted Chocolate Stout and Blueberry Pancake.

Enjoy Family Fun Month in Metro Detroit, and try to spend as much of it outdoors as possible!
