Remember the days of summer vacation, when you had nothing but sunny days ahead and spent much of the time uttering the words, “I’m bored”? I don’t know about you, but unless you chose the career path of schoolteacher, you’re likely not basking in the same vacation time as an adult.

Vacation is glorious, but it’s also expensive. You have to not only take a chunk of time off of work, but if you’re a grown up with a family, you have to make sure your spouse can do the same, and it’s a whole lot of work.

While surely you have some sort of big summer vacation planned for the coming months, why not take a staycation while you’re waiting for it? Staycations are cheaper, they’re closer to home, and they allow you to get away from your daily life without actually going very far. Here are a few great staycation opportunities right here in southeast Michigan:

Detroit Marriott Troy, 200 W. Big Beaver Rd., Troy, is a 4.5 star hotel that offers a handful of different getaway packages right in your own backyard (practically). The Family Movie Night Package includes an overnight stay for up to four people, a large one topping pizza, two packs of candy and beverages for the whole clan. Not to mention, you get access to the indoor swimming pool, and you get to pick out an in-room movie!

Create unforgettable memories with the Chevy Traverse, the perfect SUV for family adventures.

The package costs $139 to $149 and is available through the end of the year. Other staycation deals available at the Detroit Marriott Troy include the Ultimate Shopping Package (with a $25 gift card to the Somerset Collection), romantic Couples Getaway Package, Discover Comedy Castle (which includes two tickets to Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle) and more.

Courtyard Detroit Downtown, 333 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, is another highly rated hotel in the area with great options when it comes to staying locally. If you’re a Detroit baseball fan, seriously consider taking advantage of the Grand Slam Baseball Fan Package this summer. With it, you’ll receive overnight accommodations, breakfast for two adults and two children at the hotel restaurant, complimentary valet parking, $20 in Tigers Fun Money to be used at Comerica Park and a coupon for $2 off draft beer at the Courtyard bar.

The only things not included are the tickets, but other than that, you’ll be all set to go to the ballgame. The package costs $184 to $289 and is valid through the end of September. Nothing says summer in Detroit quite like baseball, and this is a great way to incorporate America’s favorite pastime into your staycation.

Westin Southfield Detroit, 1500 Town Center, Southfield, is merely 20 minutes from downtown Detroit, so depending on where you live, this could be a great staycation consideration. If you’ve been eager to explore the Henry Ford Museum, now’s your chance! This particular hotel offers a Henry Ford Museum package.

Rates start at $169 per night and include two tickets to the Henry Ford Museum. There’s a lot going on at the Henry Ford this summer, including several exhibits, and there’s always plenty of shopping to be had at the museum store. It wouldn’t be a true vacation unless you came back with some souvenirs, now would it?

The Henry Ford Museum package is available for arrivals Thursday through Saturday.

Hampton Inn Ann Arbor, 925 Victors Way, Ann Arbor, is located near the University of Michigan, where check in is at 3 p.m. and check out is at noon. There are a few different packages to choose from here, including the Dinner on Us package. With it, you’ll receive a $25 gift certificate to some of Main Street’s most popular restaurants, including Real Seafood Company, Gratzi, Palio and The Chop House.

If you’re planning this staycation for your birthday, keep in mind that you’ll receive half off of your meal at any of the aforementioned restaurants on your special day. Be sure to book this deal by the end of October, when it expires. The package will run you about $169 to $179.

Other staycation packages worth mentioning include the Shop & Drop Package (including a $25 gift card to Briarwood Mall), Weekend Getaway Package and Hands on Museum Package.

The Dearborn Inn, 20301 Oakwood, Dearborn, realizes that the most important part of getting away is relaxation. That’s why you should sign yourself up for the Spa Getaway, which will gift you with a week’s worth of vacation relaxation in one day.

The package includes a night in a deluxe guest room, a breakfast buffet for two and your choice of custom spa service at nearby Om Spa (with complimentary shuttle service to and from your appointment, naturally).

When it comes to getting pampered, you can choose from a Classic Manicure and Pedicure, Gentleman’s Manicure and Pedicure, 50 Minute Swedish Massage, Vitamin C Facial or Zen Garden Body Polish. This package costs $199 to $304 and is available through the start of December.

Additional staycation packages available at The Dearborn Inn include Discover the Henry Ford, Wine and Dine in Colonial Style and Pride and Joy Couples Getaway.

No matter where you choose to staycation in southeast Michigan, be sure to make it a memorable one! And don’t forget to send me a postcard.
