The new year will feature many reasons to celebrate, including a slew of Metro Detroit events that highlight the beauty of winter in Michigan. Go ahead and take down the tree and lights, but keep the fuzzy mittens and knitted hats close by. You’ll want to bundle up for these local winter festivals.
Motown Winter Blast is back, this time in the heart of downtown Royal Oak. February 18-20, experience free ice skating, the fan-favorite winter slide, zip-lining, and an ice garden showcasing local ice sculptors and live demonstrations. Chow down at the food truck rally and enjoy live entertainment while you take in the winter wonderland. Best of all, admission to the festival is FREE!
January 14 and 15, downtown Rochester will glow with fireworks, ice sculptures, and of course, the Big, Bright Light Show. Be sure to check out the ice carving competition along West 4th Street Saturday afternoon.
The Oak Park Community Center and Ice Rink will host this year’s Winterfest festival on January 16, 2-5 p.m The fest will feature free hot chocolate, arts and crafts, face painting, live music, and more. Admission is free and sponsored by the City of Oak Park.

Oakland Township’s Bear Creek Nature Park marks the spot for this year’s Winter Carnival on February 5. Enjoy live entertainment, crafts, a magic show, ice sculpture demonstrations with photo ops, archery target shooting, penguin bowling, a winter scavenger hunt, kiddie sledding, ice skating, and more. Sip on hot chocolate or grab a slice of pizza while you enjoy a fun, family-oriented day outdoors. Free parking is available at Rochester Christian Church. Admission is free!
Right in Warren City Square, Cold Rush is a free festival that will feature ice skating, food trucks, glow skating, a live DJ, ice sculptures, and a bonfire with s’mores. Check it out on January 22 from 2-9 p.m.
