What makes a business great? Is it the customers? The product? Or is it the people behind it? If this list of businesses, all owned by women, is any indication, we’d say it’s the people behind it all. These women have all put their livelihoods and passions into a business they only saw fit for Metro Detroit. This is by no means a comprehensive list of awesome women-owned businesses in the area, but we think these ones are pretty cool.
Brooke Miller – Honey
The life of a mother is a never-ending job. That’s why it’s good that people like Honey founder Brooke Miller has created a space for moms and moms-to-be to work on themselves, their career and their family.
“Honey was created because, as a mom, I personally needed it, and knew other women did too,” Miller said. “I couldn’t not create it.”
Honey has enabled women across Metro Detroit to be the best version of themselves since it opened in Ferndale.
“It heeds the important call from mothers who are saying, ‘I want to do this (parenting, partnership, life) well, please give me the support and community to do that,’” Miller said.
Alexandra Clark – Bon Bon Bon
You haven’t seen chocolates like the ones at Bon Bon Bon. That’s because founder Alexandra Clark and her crew, “The Babes Babes Babes,” have committed themselves to the art of confection and chocolate. There are several assorted boxes of bon bons or you can build your own box. If you’re feeling really adventurous, check out one of Bon Bon Bon’s Bon Bon Bon workshop.
Roslyn Karamoko – Détroit is the New Black
If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice the accent mark in “Détroit is the New Black.” That same accent mark can be seen all over the clothing designed by owner Roslyn Karamoko. There, you will find tees and sweatshirts that have the shop’s full logo printed on them or just a simple “dét.” Either way, DITNB carries apparel for men, women and kids, as well as accessories, like tote bags and water bottles.
Kate Williams – Lady of the House
Baked into the philosophy (and name) of Lady of the House is an admiration for the women that we grew up with in our respective homes. Be they mothers, sisters or someone else, they are the matriarch’s of our families and Lady of the House puts that front and center, by taking to heart the way in which they take care of their guests. The food is carefully chosen and the preparation includes a heaping helping of TLC.
Trisha Stander, Rita Nelson, Tammy Eugenio – 3 Dogs 1 Cat
As the name suggests, 3 Dogs 1 Cat is a pet care boutique located in Eastern Market. Owned by Trisha Stander, Rita Nelson and Tammy Eugenio, this shop carries all manner of Detroit and Michigan-branded products for all your four-legged friends. That includes leashes, snacks, organic dog supplements and more.
“It began as a store focused on animals but slowly evolved into a theme based gift shoppe for those who celebrate their love for their best fur friends,” said co-owner Tammy Eugenio.
