At this point, the New Year’s resolution thing is either working out, or it’s a total bust. If your momentum is starting to dwindle, don’t fret. The year is young. Perhaps a new skill or trade will reignite your 2016 at the start! A variety of local workshops are scattered throughout the Metro Detroit area, and are a great way to challenge yourself and learn something new. Here are a few to look out for in the near future:

Free Intro to Coding Workshop

The Office Coffee Shop and Grand Circus of Detroit are offering a free coding workshop on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at The Office Coffee Shop in Royal Oak. The workshop is an introduction to coding, no experience necessary! The workshop covers things like commonly used terms by programmers, data types, boolean expressions and conditional statements.

Drop-in Workshops at the Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts free drop-in workshops on Fridays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m. Throughout the month of January, Fridays include Winter Counts Workshops, Saturdays feature Printmaking Workshops and Sundays cover Weaving Workshops. There will also be a Collage Portraits Workshop to celebrate Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Find Your Core Workshop

Speaking of New Year’s resolutions, exercise is obviously a big one. Namasté Yoga in Royal Oak hosts this workshop, which focuses on the abdomen, lower abdomen, obliques, spine and back, on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both yoga and Pilates movements will be incorporated in this workshop, which will train your core muscles to work together properly and maintain posture and agility.
