The city of Detroit is home to more than just Motown. While the city is largely known as being the pioneer of soul music back in the 60s, it is also the birthplace of techno music in the late 80s and 90s. The most recent musical boom out of Detroit is garage rock, largely due to the success of The White Stripes, who hail from Detroit. Detroit has a thriving and talented music scene that comes together as more than just an industry, but a close-knit community whose collaboration defines the sound of Detroit. Local musician, Jeff Arcel, gives his opinion of the city stating that “for as small as Detroit’s music scene is, compared to other major cities, it’s pretty impressive to see how endless the talent pool is… in my opinion, we have more talent per capita than any other big city”.
A unique display of Detroit’s collaboration will be showcased at the 4th Annual Rock Lottery taking place this Friday, April 20, 2012 at 9pm at the Magic Stick in Detroit. This is the perfect example of the interaction that takes place between local artists in and around the city. 60 local artists participate in this fun event in which they are all randomly divided into groups. Each group is given one week to choose not only a cover song to learn but to also create a completely original tune of their own. The creativity extends into choosing a name for their new band and putting on an entertaining stage performance. Arcel, whose band The Terrible Twos is competing in this year’s lottery, says he enjoys the event because “it’s fun to see unlikely artists grouped together and interesting to see what people can pull off in a week”. In addition to putting on a great show the bands are also helping out their city. Proceeds from this year’s Lottery, which has a $10 cover charge, will benefit The Greening of Detroit project (http://greeningofdetroit.com/), which is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring people to help create a ‘greener’ Detroit through reforestation and environmental education.
The Rock Lottery is one of several events happening throughout the year to showcase Detroit musicians. Be sure to get downtown to the Magic Stick tomorrow to support a greener Detroit and rock out with the local talent.
