I am going to take a wild guess here and say the majority of you have never heard of the Palmer Park Art Fair. That is because it has not been around for 30 years. I’ll admit I had never heard of it until earlier this year. Well, guess what? It’s back and better than ever. The event takes place this weekend, starting tomorrow at 10 a.m. and running through Sunday at 5 p.m. Oh, plus, admission is free. Score!
When the art fair first kicked off in the 1970s, it was a rather groundbreaking affair. I wasn’t around then, but from what I gather, the idea of outdoor art fairs was relatively new and said events were not as common as they are in present day. The Palmer Park Art Fair was created by the park’s council in an effort to “emphasize the creativity in this historical neighborhood.”
Much like the innovative efforts of the people who put together the original art fair, the 2014 version is going to do things a little bit differently. This isn’t going to be your standard art fair with rows of tents and a couple hundred paintings.
The fair takes place around the pond, with the artists’ booths being organically integrated with the trees. A charity gala with food, drinks and a concert featuring Detroit blues singer Thornetta Davis takes place on Saturday from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. In addition, there is so much more to do at the art fair—including, iron sculpting and a hot glass working studio. Don’t forget to check out the martini bar offering Michigan-made ingredients.

The art on display will be compiled mainly from local, Detroit artists, but other artists from around the country will come to showcase their work as well. If you’re looking for some great art pieces to add to your collection then this is the place to be.
The People for Palmer Park and Integrity Shows worked together to bring us this event. Both entities want to “reinvent” the art fair. Much like Detroit is an evolving, ever-changing city, so is the art world. The event showcases that through demonstrations, themed sections, art activities for children, street art and more. Plus, of course, food and beer tents!
This art fair is designed to promote how our city has gone through a lot of turmoil, but still remains optimistic and strong. It shows that the people of Detroit are here to help bring it back to prominence.
