The weather might not be as hot as it once was, but for many runners that’s actually a good thing. Cooler air, better conditions, and scenic views make for a more pleasant run than the sometimes harsh summer heat. Metro Detroit organizations and communities realize that and have plenty of runs taking place during the autumn months. So don’t put those running shoes away just yet and head out to these great fall runs in the D.
The 3rd annual St. Jude Walk/Run returns to Detroit to raise money to help defeat childhood cancer. The family friendly event will feature a timed 5K walk and run beginning at 9 a.m. You can make an impact in a child’s life by helping the organization meet their goal of $500,000.
Women and Men Working for Change’s Domestic Violence 5K (10/5)

The 3rd annual Women and Men Working for Change’s Domestic Violence 5K will take place at Parkridge Park in Ypsilanti. The event’s goal is to bring much needed awareness to the importance of community in supporting survivors of domestic violence. On-hand will be speakers, refreshments, a bounce house, and face painters. Hurley Field in Berkley will host the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk on Sunday, October 6. The special event honors the life of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller who lost his life on September 11, 2001 when he ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. The event will help benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation that helps and supports first responders throughout the country. Combining a colorful autumn run with a worthy cause is Rochester Hills’ Scare Away Hunger 5K on Sunday, October 20. The local tradition’s route will take runners around Rochester University, through Lake Norcentra Park, out to the Clinton River Trail and back on campus towards the finish line. Proceeds benefit Neighborhood House, which provides food, clothing, and self-sufficiency services to those in need. Shelby Township’s River Bends Park is a beautiful park anytime of the year, but it is especially beautiful in the fall. Run the Bends on Saturday, November 2 gives attendees the opportunity to experience all of the rolling hills, dirt trails, and scenic views the park has to offer.
