If there’s one treat that screams summer it has to be ice cream. There’s nothing better than enjoying a cool ice cream on a hot day. Whether you’re a purist walking along the chocolate/vanilla debate, or you enjoy unique flavors that pack a punch, there is a local ice cream shop waiting for you to stroll in. These are ten of the best ice cream shops in Metro Detroit that are a must-visit this summer.

Browndog Barlor

Northville and Farmington 

Browndog Barlor was founded in Northville in 2013. They specialize in unique ice cream flavors like Bourbon Maple Bacon, Beer & Pretzels, and Cereal Killer. In addition to ice cream, they also serve sandwiches, salads, and flatbreads. They have won several awards for their ice cream, including a gold medal at the World Dairy Expo in 2018.

Guernsey Farms Dairy

Guernsey Farms Dairy was founded in 1940 and is one of the oldest dairy farms in Michigan.

They offer ice cream in a variety of flavors, including classics like mint chocolate chip and butter pecan. Their ice cream is made with 16% butterfat, which gives it a rich and creamy texture. In addition to ice cream, they also sell milk, cheese, and other dairy products. Their main store and restaurant is in Northville, but you can find Guernsey ice cream at stores across Michigan.

Calder Dairy & Farm

9334 Finzel Road, Carleton

Calder Dairy & Farm uses milk from their own cows to make their ice cream, which is free of artificial growth hormones. They offer traditional flavors like vanilla and chocolate, as well as more unique options like Blueberry Cheesecake and Kahlua Fudge. In addition to ice cream, they also sell dairy products like milk, butter, and cheese. Calder Dairy & Farm has stores in Lincoln Park and Flat Rock in addition to their farm in Carleton.

Chocolate Bar Cafe

Chocolate Bar Cafe has been a Grosse Pointe Woods staple since 1921. Their primary focus is on ice cream treats such as The Cupcake Sundae or the Peppermint Twist. They also offer a variety of baked goods such as cakes and pastries. 

Custard Company

32922 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak

Custard Company was founded in 1979 and has been serving frozen custard ever since. Their custard is made fresh daily and is available in vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the day. They offer a variety of toppings, including hot fudge, caramel, and fruit. 

Erma’s Original Frozen Custard

Shelby Township and Warren

Erma’s Original Frozen Custard is made fresh daily and is available in vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the day. They also offer sundaes, shakes, and floats, as well as hot dogs and other snacks. Erma’s features a walk-up window and outdoor seating.

Modern Cone

Modern Cone is a newer addition to the metro Detroit ice cream scene, having opened in 2020.

They specialize in rolled ice cream, which is made by pouring liquid ice cream onto a frozen surface and then scraping it into rolls. They offer a variety of flavors and toppings, including Oreo, Nutella, and fresh fruit. Modern Cone also offers outrageous ice cream treats like ice cream nachos and ice cream cakes.

Ray’s Ice Cream

Ray’s Ice Cream was founded in 1958 and has been a staple of the Royal Oak community ever since. They offer over 50 flavors of ice cream, including seasonal options like Pumpkin Pie and Peppermint Stick. Ray’s is known for their classic decor and old-fashioned charm, which includes a retro soda fountain and a jukebox. You can also pick up ice cream molded into shapes for holidays and special occasions.

Sweet Treats Station

Sweet Treats Station is a family-owned ice cream shop that offers a variety of Hershey’s ice cream flavors, as well as sorbet and sugar-free options. Sweet Treats Station is known for its homemade waffle cones and bowls. They also offer cakes, pies, and other desserts for special occasions.

Treat Dreams

Ferndale, Midtown, and Grosse Pointe Woods

Treat Dreams was founded in Ferndale in 2010 and has since expanded to several locations throughout metro Detroit. They offer unique and creative ice cream flavors, like Earl Grey Tea and Lavender Honey. Treat Dreams also offers vegan and dairy-free options made with coconut milk and other non-dairy ingredients. In addition to ice cream, they sell baked goods like cookies and brownies. Be on the lookout for The Dream Machine, Treat Dreams’ food truck, which is also available for catering.
