If you’re like me, you might have heard about bubble tea, or boba, but don’t know know what it is. Well, I’m here to help with that and give you a few suggestions for where you can give the popular Taiwanese beverage a try in the metro Detroit area.
First things first: bubble tea is a bit of a misnomer as it is made in a variety of ways, none of which include carbonation. It gets its name from the fact that, a lot of the time, the drink is shaken up, which produces bubbles.
Some variations of bubble tea are made with traditional green or black tea, others are made as smoothies or slushies. One thing that is present in all bubble tea are the tapioca pearls, which are small, soft, edible pearl-like objects. However, these tapioca pearls are sometimes swapped out for meat from a coconut or gummies filled with fruit juice, all of which have similar textures.
