While people have already jumped on the cold brew coffee train, it’s nitro brewed coffee that will be on the rise in 2019. Similar to the brewing method used for cold brew coffee (seeping the coffee in water for extended periods of time), nitro brew coffee adds a bit of nitrogen to give the coffee a smooth texture and flavor profile. To give it a try, check out one of these great coffee shops in Metro Detroit!
Atomic Coffee in Royal Oak opened in 2015 and serves delicious hot and cold beverages in addition to pastries, omelettes and more. On their menu, you will find an entire section dedicated to nitro cold brew coffee. This includes a traditional pour, as well as speciality variations, like a nitro cold brew float (two scoops of vanilla ice cream) and the “Polar Bear” (nitro cold brew, Ghirardelli white chocolate peppermint syrup, float of cream).

Stop into The Proving Grounds Coffee & Ice Cream in Milford for a cup to go with a scoop of ice cream from Browndog Creamery or pastries from Crust Bakery. Be sure to check their website’s events calendar as they have regular poetry readings, live music, children’s storytime and more.
Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co.
Making use of a draught system, Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co.’s flagship Midtown location has both cold brew and nitro cold brew coffee available on tap. Going the extra mile, Great Lakes serves its cold brew coffee in a chilled glass over ice and its nitro cold brew in a chilled 12 oz. tulip glass sans ice.
Back in 2017, we mentioned that New Order Coffee had two locations in the works: their flagship in Midtown and a “coffee lab” in Ferndale. The coffee lab houses their offices and roasting headquarters, while the Midtown location serves smooth, flavorful nitro coffee on tap. Following the opening of a new Royal Oak location, the plan is to turn the Ferndale lab into a cafe, as well.
If you’re in the market for a cold brew coffee keg for business or pleasure, a Michigan-based company called Uncommon Coffee Roasters offers weekly keg rentals as well as financing options for your own NitroPro system. Kegs offered include original cold brew, barrel aged, single origin and nitro-infused. If you’re unfamiliar with UCR, they have been around for more than 10 years, making high-quality cold brew coffee and selling it in bottles and cartons.
