There is something so satisfying about crunching down on fresh veggies, and this meal is the perfect one to do so. If you’re looking to start the year off with healthier meals (or just need a freshness fix) one of the healthier meals you can eat is the first one that comes to everyone’s mind: salad. Salads are pretty customizable, with the toppings and types of lettuce up to you. If you’re looking to eat fewer carbs and more greens this year, check out these places you can grab a delicious salad that won’t leave your stomach rumbling.
OTTAVA VIA
1400 Michigan Avenue, Detroit
Besides offering delicious pasta and pizzas, Ottava Via has excellent salads as well. Choose to order how these come, or add on chicken, shrimp, Italian sausage, or meatballs. There is the classic Caesar option, with crispy romaine lettuce, white anchovies, farm egg, and fresh parmesan cheese, all topped with housemade garlic anchovy dressing. The chopped salad is also very fresh, made with a mix of lettuce, basil, red onion, cucumber, celery, garbanzo beans, finocchiona salami, aged provolone cheese, and housemade creamy Italian vinaigrette. You can also order a Burrata Caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes, basil pesto, balsamic vinegar, and sea salt, which is a classic choice, but delicious nonetheless.

ANITA’S KITCHEN
Multiple locations in Metro Detroit
Anita’s Kitchen has a great menu to choose from, which includes different salads to enjoy. The fattoush salad is a favorite, with romaine, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, parsley, and toasted pita chips, which can also be topped with chicken shawarma and feta cheese. Another great choice is Anita’s chopped, with grilled chicken, romaine, tomato, hard-boiled egg, bacon, and feta cheese. “Anita’s Kitchen brings a New World approach to Old World family traditions by serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in a fast, fresh, healthy way,” Jared Groth, Director of Operations shares. “After 43 years, Anita’s Kitchen is still at the top of our game! We’re consistently voted ‘Best Mediterranean Restaurant’ in Metro Detroit, and we pride ourselves on providing more gluten-free, soy-free, vegetarian, and vegan options than anyone else in town! Regardless of your dietary restrictions, we have something delicious to serve you, and that includes our homemade desserts!”
ROAST
25090 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak
525 East Brown Street, Birmingham
While Roast is a great neighborhood coffee shop, the food is also delectable. These spots have cafe-style seating, an open meeting lounge, and a seasonal outdoor patio to enjoy your beverages and bites. The lunch menu features two salads, a berry salad and a Roast house salad. The berry salad has a bed of mixed greens, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, red onion, goat cheese, sliced almonds, and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. The house salad also has mixed greens, but it also has chickpeas, cucumber, Roma tomato, red onion, shredded parmesan cheese, and house dressing, and is served with a sliced toasted baguette.
TOWNHOUSE
500 Woodward Avenue, Detroit
180 Pierce Street, Birmingham
Townhouse has two locations, both offering a fairly special dining experience. From the decor to the staff, Townhouse is sure to leave a lasting impression. When it comes to salads (and the rest of its menu, really), there is something for everyone. The Detroit location offers four salads during dinner, including grains & greens, seared tuna, chicken & kale, and crab & avocado salad, which has cucumber, dill kosho, lime, and tobiko. In Birmingham, choose from the Caesar, steak salad, power salad, date night with white cheddar, apple, cucumber, and almonds, or the CeCe, which has kale, arugula, herbs, feta cheese, walnuts, quinoa, and topped with a honey-lime vinaigrette.
7 GREENS
1222 Library Street, Detroit
7 Greens is a great option for cleaner eating, with fresh ingredients and delicious food. There are eight favorite salads available, or you’re welcome to make your own. KFoxy is 7 Green’s version of a Caesar salad and has romaine, shaved parmesan, and butterons (think croutons) with a Caesar sauce. Cachie is a Mediterranean-style salad, with romaine, kale, hummus, quinoa tabouleh, pita chips, baked falafel, tomatoes, and cucumbers, with a pomegranate sumac sauce. 7 Greens labels Las Bear as their ‘#1 favorite’ salad and it includes romaine, corn, black beans, cherry tomatoes, avocado, organic blue chips, white cheddar cheese, and a chipotle ranch sauce. Another delicious and healthy option to choose from at 7 Greens are smoothie bowls, which we dive into here.
