From the successful Top 10 Cares program to companies stepping up and doing good in Detroit communities, the Coronavirus pandemic has shown the courteous spirit of Metro Detroiters. Our communities want to help and have been helping those in need over the past two months. Whether it’s making sure health care workers have proper shoes, helping feeding those in need, or putting a smile on a community’s face with a squirrel picnic, here are some examples of Metro Detroiters doing good in the community.

Shoe Pantry Plus

Dr. Anthony Weinert is a board-certified foot surgeon in Troy and founder of the non-profit Shoe Pantry Plus, which provides new shoes and socks for those in need. The non-profit donated 2,500 pairs of Crocs to health care workers on the frontlines at hospitals in Metro Detroit. Be sure to visit Shoe Pantry Plus’ website to see how you can make a difference in the Metro Detroit community.

Focus Detroit

Adam Murphy, director of the non-profit Focus Detroit, is helping those who need food during the Coronavirus pandemic. He knows that many schools are doing food drives during the week, but he set up a food drive that will help struggling families on the weekends. You can find more information on these food drives, along with other Focus Detroit initiatives, on their Facebook page.

Maison du Noix

James Vreeland is providing a little levity to his Detroit neighborhood by building a tiny restaurant called Maison du Noix, which is French for “The Nut House.” The restaurant welcomes squirrels and blue jays to his front yard for a four course meal consisting of seeds, breadsticks, peanuts, and apples. You can view a livestream of the restaurant on Maison du Noix’s Facebook page.

Horatio Williams Foundation

The Horatio Williams Foundation kitchen is helping to feed families living in shelters during this difficult time. Celebrity chef Maxcel Hardy, owner of COOP Caribbean Fusion in Detroit, is one of the chefs helping feed Detroit’s homeless during the Coronavirus pandemic and has helped prepare more than 20,000 meals for the homeless. You can see everything that the Horatio Williams Foundation is doing to help Detroiters by visiting their website.
