The dog days of summer are fully upon us, and while a good old’ fashion cookout with BBQ might be good, every once in a while you might be craving something a little lighter. A fresh salad, veggie sandwich, or fruit based dishes might be enough to fill you up without leaving that heavy feeling afterwards. Here are five Metro Detroit restaurants that offer light meals to fill you up on a hot summer day.

Brome Modern Eatery

With a commitment to minimizing their environmental impact, you can feel good about Brome Modern Eatery’s menu and ingredients any time of the year. Their menu is full of organic, fresh foods for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We’d suggest their Kale Crunch salad which is made with kale, shaved parmesan, toasted breadcrumbs, dried cranberries, toasted pine nuts, and lemon vinaigrette.

Grange Kitchen & Bar

Adventure starts with a vehicle that’s up for anything. Trailblazer combines comfort you want, the versatility you need, and the technology to make every moment count.

Locally sourced from Michigan farms, Grange Kitchen & Bar knows how to bring the freshest ingredients together for a satisfying meal. Their summer menu features great vegetable and pasta dishes including their roasted vegetables and local grain salad with wheat berries, rye berries, apple, sherry vinaigrette, and shaved parmesan cheese. The menu selections change daily so be sure to call ahead with any questions about the food options available.

A brunch bar in downtown Detroit, Dime Store features unique dishes made with only the freshest ingredients. All of their sandwiches can be made on a bed of mixed greens instead of bread for no extra charge. We’d suggest the chicken salad sandwich made with honey mustard-thyme chicken, grapes, red onions, walnuts, and arugula. The restaurant is a great follow on Instagram as they always show off their latest and greatest creations.

Honest John’s

Honest John’s is a great spot to meet someone for a late breakfast or early lunch as they offer a variety of breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Their Pocket O’Joy sandwich is a favorite and features hummus, spinach, cucumber, tomato, pickled onion and feta seasoned with balsamic vinegar on pita. They also feature a late night menu if you’re looking for a little breakfast fix at night.

Cacao Tree Cafe

Using fresh, nourishing ingredients to create satisfying superfood smoothies and lunch options, Cacao Tree Cafe in Royal Oak is a great way to get some energy for the rest of the day. Their salad menu includes some great options, but if you’re looking to fill up we’d suggest the Foodie’s Favorite with mixed greens, carrots, broccoli, red cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, garbanzo beans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower, raisins, avocado, and red onions. Their smoothies pair perfectly with their salads and you can add superfoods such as omega blend, cacao powder, or camu camu.
