There is a pretty good argument to be made that grilled cheese sandwiches are the ultimate comfort food. Whether you’re sick and need something filling to go with your favorite soup, need a good sandwich to lift your spirits on a rainy day, or just want the perfect warm sandwich, a grilled cheese sandwich is always the right call. While you might have the perfect recipe at home, there are plenty of Metro Detroit restaurants that put unique and tasty twists on the classic sandwich. Here are five of the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the D.

Grillcheezerie Sandwich Shoppe

More than your typical grilled cheese, Grillcheezerie Sandwich Shoppe in Ann Arbor is known for their mouth-watering sandwich creations and flavorful soups. Their menu is loaded with unique grilled cheese sandwiches, but it is their S’Mac sandwich featuring a three cheese mac blend, melted aged cheddar served on artisan white bread that is their most popular. Be sure to check out their full menu here (we recommend not on an empty stomach, though).

Detroit Beer Company

Located in the historic Hartz Building in Downtown Detroit, the Detroit Beer Company might be known for what’s on tap, but their menu is just as jaw-opening. Their country grilled cheese sandwich features fontina and gruyere cheese, smoked bacon and sliced granny smith apples. Yeah, apples on a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s a thing and it’s awesome, so be sure to try it and pair it with their tomato bisque soup.

Woodbridge Pub

More than your typical pub food, Woodbridge Pub in Detroit takes pride in making great tasting food to pair with their large selection of drinks. Their grilled cheese sandwich features havarti and swiss on Detroit nine grain with the option of adding ham or turkey. There are plenty of other great sandwiches and burgers to warm you up on a cold afternoon, so be sure to check out the full menu here.

One-Eyed Betty’s

Known for their draft beers and laid back atmosphere, One-Eyed Betty’s in Ferndale is always good for a fun time. Their handwiches (not a typo) includes the aptly titled Ridiculously Good Grilled Cheese served with their tomato jam for dipping. Pair it with their beer cheese soup, and you’ll surely leave stuffed and satisfied.

GoCheez

You know the perfect grilled cheese sandwich picture with the cheese oozing out as it is split in half? Well GoCheez specializes in making sandwiches perfect for that type of picture. The gourmet grilled cheese food truck travels all around Metro Detroit delivering the cheesy goods on lunch breaks. Be sure to visit their website to see where they’re popping up next.
