What is a waffle? According to the dictionary, “a waffle is a dish made from leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape, and surface impression.” What is a unique waffle? There is no definition. It is whatever you want it to be, whether you liked them topped with sprinkles, stuffed or served with chicken. What makes it unique is also where you can go to get the creative, pastry-like dish. Check out these waffles dishes in the D.

Waffle Sandwich

A warm waffle sandwich with custard in the middle. Yum! Well, at Custard Hut, this is what is being served up. What is more unique than your favorite custard topping a fresh, warm fluffy waffle. And don’t forget the sprinkles and chocolate syrup!

Creole Flare Waffle

On the menu, listed under Mary Elle’s Lighter Meals, this plate of chicken and waffles is as unique as it comes, featuring a creole flair. At Faustina’s Creole and Soul Food, the chicken is deep fried with love and soul from the recipe of Chef Anthony’s late father Lenardo Faustina III, who was an international chef himself.

What Up Doe?!

Nothing is more unique and original to Detroit than this waffle combo at Kuzzo’s. This waffle (or should I say waffles as customers get two?) is topped with three pieces of fried chicken and served with grits and two eggs with cheese.

Sweet Potato Waffle

Where else can you get sweet potato Belgian waffles?! You guessed it: Sweet Potato Sensations! They are selling more than sweet potato pies. Not only are the waffles made from fresh ingredients and served hot, but they are also served with a tasty salmon croquet.

Stuffed Waffles

What’s better than waffles? A stuffed waffle! Yes! At the Waffles and Omelette Cafe,  customers can fill their bellies with a banana-berry or banana nut-stuffed waffle. Their motto is “never flat, always fluffy” and that’s the truth with everything made to order and packed with fresh ingredients.
