When things feel overwhelming, it’s important to pause and reflect on those feelings. What is overwhelming you? What can you do to overcome it? Mindfulness is a key component to that. It’s all about living in the present and being aware of the moment, rather than constantly worrying about the past or the future.

There are many ways to practice mindfulness, from yoga to meditation, and plenty of places in Metro Detroit that offer services to help you achieve a more peaceful state of mind.

They also teach some unique, sometimes one-off, classes.

Detroit Zen Center

Founded in 1990 by Abbot Hwalson Sunim, Detroit Zen Center is a meditation training center for monks and lay students, studying Zen Buddhism. The Center also hosts group meditation sessions that are open to the public. The sessions are free with a suggested donation of $10-$20. “First Sundays” meditation also includes interactive exploration and discussion and concludes with an organic, vegan brunch.

Studio for Mindfulness

Studio for Mindfulness was founded to help people cope with everyday anxiety, stress and distractions. Through private, group and corporate sessions, its founder leads people through guided meditation classes that help them achieve a state of relaxation quickly in order to reduce the negative impact of both external and internal stressors. Clients end up sleeping better, improving their concentration and become more in-tune with the present moment.

Nature’s Playhouse

With a focus on clients that are raising children, Nature’s Playhouse offers classes that are beneficial for parents and their kids. There are yoga sessions that are accompanied by supervised playtime for kids, an LGBTQ parenting group, infant massage classes, prenatal yoga and more.
