Cannelle by Matt Knio is a French bakery that offers a variety of pastries, breads, and cakes. The bakery’s specialty is its croissants, which come in a variety of flavors, including almond, chocolate, and ham and cheese. “Featuring quality ingredients, such as imported French butter and chocolate, all our goods are handcrafted by a team using French techniques and a passion for delivering a mouthwatering experience,” says Matt Knio, pastry chef and owner of Cannelle. Astoria Pastry Shop first opened in 1971 in Greektown by the Teftis family. Astoria has a wide variety of dessert options from traditional Greek and Italian pastries to cakes, cookies, and chocolates. Unique to both locations, they are open late at night, unlike most pastry shops, so it’s the perfect place to grab a sweet treat after dinner or being out at the bar.

Treat Dreams is an artisanal ice cream shop that offers unique flavors like Cereal Killer, Honey Lavender, and Bumpy Cake. The shop also serves vegan ice cream, made with coconut milk or almond milk.

For the Love of Sugar

100 Erskine Street, Detroit

For the Love of Sugar is one of the must-try bakeries right downtown. “We are a bakery/cafe right in the heart of Midtown Detroit offering a variety of cake slices, cookies, brownies, macarons, coffee, lattes and more! We also offer gluten-free and vegan options! Order a custom cake for your event or come in for just a slice of cake!” says Manal Hussein, owner of For the Love of Sugar. Their cakes are outrageously good and like she mentioned, you can get them by the slice or slices to create a cake board for a special occasion. Some of their flavors include Matilda (super extra rich chocolate a la Bruce and the Trunchbull from Matilda), Fruity Pebbles, and Strawberry Shortcake.
